B.S. Major Requirements:
Environmental Chemistry Emphasis

The environmental Chemistry emphasis provides students with the tools to understand the processes that govern chemical transformation in soil, water and air, to analyze for the key chemicals in the environment, and to make meaningful predictions about the fates of these chemicals. The emphasis draws on subjects outside of a classical chemistry degree to include courses in atmospheric science, soil microbiology, environmental toxicology and mineralogy.

The sample schedule has required courses generally taken as early in the program as possible in order to permit the greatest flexibility in choosing electives and to allow qualified students to elect a full year of undergraduate research, Chem 194H or 199, in their senior year. Elective courses are shown in italics.

There are offset sequences of Chemistry 2ABC, Mathematics 16ABC and 21ABC, and Physics 7ABC that start in different quarters than shown above. For the upper division courses, an offset sequence of Chemistry 118ABC starts in Winter. Chemistry 105, which has Chemistry 107A-107B as a prerequisite, is offered also in Fall.

Students should begin their mathematics preparation no later than the second quarter of their first year, and their physics preparation no later than the first quarter of their second year. Mathematics 21A-21B-21C is recommended as the best preparation for the Chemistry 107 sequence.
