B.S. Major Requirements:
Chemical Physics Emphasis

The Chemical Physics emphasis provides students with an in-depth understanding of the fundamentals of chemistry, focusing on those areas that are at the interface of chemistry and physics. These include, for example, the experimental measurement and theoretical calculation of the detailed properties and behavior of atoms and molecules. An important experimental tool in chemical physics is spectroscopy, which uses conventional or laser light to probe the atomic and molecular properties of matter.

The sample schedule has required courses generally taken as early in the program as possible in order to permit the greatest flexibility in choosing electives (shown in italics) and to allow qualified students to elect a full year of undergraduate research, Chem 194H or 199, in their senior year. Students who plan to continue their studies in graduate school are strongly urged to participate in undergraduate research, and should consult their major advisor for further information.

There are offset sequences of Chemistry 2ABC and Mathematics 21ABCD and 22AB that start in different quarters than shown above. For the upper division courses, there are offset sequences of Chemistry 128ABC and 129ABC that start in Winter, and offset sequences of Chemistry 110ABC and Chemistry 105, 115 and 125 that start in Spring.
